Prairie High School has a new system for the halls, something simple as going to the bathroom now requires a screen and teachers approval. With the new virtual hall pass system, students have to either wait or ask for permission before leaving the classroom. Some students may disagree with this new system and others actually like it because of the safety and helping our school become better and safer.
Many of the teachers believe the new system has been going well when the technology is running properly. Ms Alway has said “ it’s working great when the technology is working. We can see where students are and have a little bit more control over those students who need more parameters.” Some people will also say that the school halls are quieter, and more students are actually staying in class instead of wandering around.
Just because most schools like the new system doesn’t mean that all are actually enjoying it. One student spoke up, “ It’s ridiculous, five minutes to use the restroom, just because the bad kids ruined it, why punish all of us” Gabe Lamia said. Some students worry about privacy and feel uncomfortable having the timer and staff able to see who uses the restroom.
But on the other hand most students actually like the new virtual hall pass system. They understand it’s bad but also understand the point of it. Skylar Huynh had said “ It helps with bigger problems and keeps us safer, but also not every student can use the bathroom in five minutes.” Most students enjoy the system but think there should be more flexibility and understanding from teachers and administrators.
For the most part, it looks like the new virtual hall pass system has been going great. The dean of students, Mr. Suksdorf, mentioned that it helps with safety issues. Such as if we have a lockdown, we would know “we had six kids out on a pass and we have to find those six kids” referring to the virtual hall pass will be helpful to know whos out of class if their was danger.
Overall the new virtual hall pass system is still new to prairie high school and the district hopes to improve and continue it. Teachers and administrators say they are open to students feedback to make prairie school a better and safe place for the students. With time and more adjustments, the system may help create a better and safer learning environment for everyone at prairie high school.
