Students at Prairie will lose Falcon Support, and the privilege to visit any classroom for academic help or to complete work every Tuesday and Thursday, beginning next school year. School administrators have already firmly decided, yet it’s been a controversial topic between students and teachers creating diverse opinions on the decision.
Falcon Support has been a part of the school schedule for years, giving students extra time to meet with teachers, work on assignments, study, or participate in clubs or activities. However, some staff members believe the period was not being used effectively by the students who needed it most. “I think the students who need it the most don’t use it,” said Ms. Truelove. “Hopefully it will force them to use their time in class more efficiently.” This is true in a sense, many upperclassmen get stopped trying to leave campus during falcon support every single time, and lots of people don’t attend the classes they really need.
The decision did create frustration among some students who relied on Falcon Support for both academic and personal benefits. Jessi Driscol, a sophomore, is disappointed about the change. “I’m pissed,” he says. He explained that “Falcon Support is a great buffer time for students” and said he will miss “playing basketball and my study hall.” This shows us that some students do really utilize this time every Tuesday and Thursday but maybe productivity is more of a trend for underclassmen compared to upperclassmen with cars.
While school officials hope removing Falcon Support will encourage stronger participation during class, some students worry that losing the period will make it harder to get extra help when needed. As the change approaches, students and staff will have to adjust to this new schedule and see whether the decision has the intended impact on students and their productivity.
