A baby monkey named Punch has captured hearts around the world after videos of him hugging a stuffed orangutan went viral on social media. The adorable Japanese macaque lives at the Ichikiawa city zoo and is a botanical garden in Chika Prefecture, Japan. Students and animal lovers alike have been following his story online.
Punch’s story began shortly after he was abandoned by his mother. To help comfort him, the zookeeper stepped in to care for him and gave him a large stuffed orangutan to hold onto. The touching images of Punch clinging to the plush toy quickly spread across social media platforms.“ I have seen videos and photos of Punch, the baby monkey,” said Tiffany Truderund. “It made me feel really sad to see him struggling to make friends and just wanting a mother’s love, with no one protecting him”.
The videos show Punch cuddling, climbing, and playing while keeping his stuffed companion close. Many viewers say the scenes are both heartwarming and emotional. “ I think animals can experience emotions like humans based off of Punch’s story,” said Melina Pankratova. “As he is living in a zoo comparing himself to monkeys his age who have a mother and seeing himself without one is sad”. His story reminds people of the importance of care, compassion, and support during difficult times.
Punch’s rise to fame also highlights how quickly positive stories had spread online. What started as a simple post from the zoo turned into an international moment of connection.“ I think a bunch of stories became popular because they went far out on tiktok,” said Tiffany Truderung. “People were drawn to how he gets pushed around, since he does have a mother to protect him and him having to take care of himself”.Millions of people have shared, liked, and commented on his videos.
For students, Punch’s story is more than just a cute viral trend. It shows how resilience and kindness can make a difference even in the animal world. As Punch continues to grow, many people around the globe will be cheering him on.
