A leader is something that is heavily taught and pushed on to the majority of people at a young age. It is a good trait to have, as it can instill confidence, motivation, and energy into the leader and the people around them. But what are good qualities of a leader? What kinds of leaders does Prairie have?
A leader, by definition, is someone who leads or commands some kind of group, from a group of people to an entire nation. But good leaders generally are more than just that. They have to connect with the people they are leading, and prove they are the one suitable for leading. They tend to command authority, allow voices to be heard, promote cooperation, discussion, and communication, and other things of the sort.
Teachers and students alike both have to learn and value leading. “A leader to me is someone who is not the type of person who tells you what to do,” Teacher Nicholas Dilitto said in response to what he believes is a good leader. “But is willing to do the same thing with you. They lead by example, they always put their best foot forward and not just look out for themselves, but their entire team.”
To many, a leader should not just command, but should work, engage, and support the people they lead. A leader should genuinely care about who and what they’re leading. Leaders should understand the motivation of their cause and people and work to push it. They should build connections between their groups. They should be someone people can come to.
No leader is perfect. “A bad leader will do what is necessary.” Sophomore Wyatt Fairly said in regards to what he could improve about his leadership. “A good leader goes beyond that. If I wanted to improve myself as a leader, I’d do the latter.”
Leading is something everyone has room to improve on. It is a very broad term, with many different meanings, types, and skills. Not everyone is born a leader, but everyone can work to become one. Different types of leading is necessary for different types of people, and overall leading is a quality that all people to an extent should learn.
