School spirit helps students connect with their school by creating lasting memories,  and building community. It is memorable to be involved in school spirit before high school comes to an end. 

Kayla Rhodes, a senior at Prairie High School who is ASB’s vice president, shares the importance of school spirit in events like assemblies, dances, and more. Rhodes values school spirit,  she says, “School spirit means like not being ashamed of your school and being proud of the school you go to and willing to dress up, go to sporting events, and represent school spirit.” This introduces the fun side of school. 

School spirit can be challenging when no one participates.¨Some students feel like school spirit is lame and not something that they want to do, so it is a big challenge to get everyone to participate when they are the odd ones out,¨ Rhodes adds.

Julie Luangphasy, a senior at prairie high school is ASB’s  president that highly encourages students to represent prairie pride. Luangphasy states, ¨Showing spirit in spirit weeks and genuinely having motivation and dedication to participate in school -related activities is what school spirit means to me.¨ Many students go all out when showing school spirit and they truly show prairie spirit while doing it.

Luangphasy acknowledges feedback from students’ thoughts on school spirit weeks and that not everyone will agree with the themes. This has taken a toll on Luangphasy. She says that,¨ It is hard to have one consistent opinion in events and especially dance themes, so we try to get a minimum of 80 percent of people on board and persuade the 20 percent that it is not as bad as they think.”
