Do Students Not Like Ice Cream?

Dairy Queen opened across the street just around one and a half months ago, but they aren’t getting the expected business from students.

“We opened this location to try and get more ice cream sales,” says Nicholas Hhelitze, an employee at Dairy Queen, “to like to try and attract the High Schoolers.”

Only around 10 to 20 students go to Dairy Queen for lunch according to Nicholas, it seems their plan is falling through.

“I work in the ice cream department and I don’t get a lot of orders…” Nicholas explains.

Most students were going to Winco or Taco Bell, said Jason Johnson, security at Prairie High School, in fact, more were going to Taco Bell alone than to Dairy Queen. He says he expected more students to be going.

“Yes I would go [to Dairy Queen] for the ice cream, but it’s so expensive,” says Jason. Perhaps the students like ice cream, they just can’t afford to get it every day.

Dairy Queen employees are expecting the number of student customers to stay pretty steady with a  slight decrease over time.
