Olivia Brown and Mackenzie Moore went all out for their first season game on Tuesday December 2nd at Prairie High School against Battleground High School.
Olivia Brown is a Junior on varsity, she’s been a varsity starter all three years and has played basketball for 10 years all together. She doesn’t have a specific position, she just plays everything needed.
Her main goal for herself this year is to become a better, more confident leader. She wants to be more vocal on the court and supportive and encouraging to her teammates. Olivia says “the most challenging thing in basketball is starting fresh every year, learning new programs, trying to fit into roles the coaches want you in.”
Olivia is a running start student and she says “running start gives more freedom and more time to do all my tasks”. She has a schedule set for when she should be at school ready for practice and when she should be doing all her school work.
Mackenzie Moore says “it’s definitely hard balancing everything out, because I have another sport I need to make time for, so time management skills are important.” Her biggest challenge is trying to balance 2 different sports at the same time. She’s learned how to get everything together and said “ it’s a great skill to have for college”.
Mackenzie finds success in basketball, finishing your own goals and being able to execute them. The goals she sets for herself is what motivates her to do better and keep going. She says the goal their team has is “for us to play as a team and build off each game and get better.”
Prairies girls basketball teams goals for this season is to make it to play offs and go even further like to districts and hopefully even state. What Olivia said she hopes to improve on this season is “to get more chemistry as a team and for everyone to play together and have each player contribute.” The coaches are holding the athletes accountable, they’re making sure the girls are well conditioned and make minimal mistakes.
The game went really well, the girls made lots of points and got more than expected. Even though battleground isn’t their number one opponent skill wise level the girls still put great effort in and made their skills shown. Their main focus each game is to play to their own levels no matter who they are playing. They learn from their own mistakes and get better from that.
