Prairie High School has a fan favorite Nick Dilitto, a substitute teacher whose enthusiasm and genuine care for students have quickly made him a standout figure around campus. With his engaging personality and passion for teaching, students are eager to see him in the classroom every day.
In an exclusive interview, Mr. Dilitto shared his thoughts on teaching, his interests, and what makes his days as a substitute so rewarding.
“My favorite subject to teach is chemistry,” he reveals with a smile. “I find it fascinating—like an explosion in class. They’re my favorite.”His passion for science is infectious, especially when he talks about his favorite holiday, the Fourth of July, because of the fireworks and explosions that light up the sky—something he clearly enjoys just as much as his students.
His journey into education began early in life. “I started wanting to teach when I was younger,” he explained. “I’ve always been in a mentor role in every job I’ve had. Even in high school, I mentored other students. I really enjoy seeing the ‘aha’ moments when students finally understand something difficult and have fun in class. That’s what I love.” His dedication to helping students grasp complex concepts and enjoy their learning experience shines through.
One of the reasons students connect so well with Mr. Dilitto is because of his unique position as a substitute teacher. “The cool thing about me being a sub is I get to see so many different students every day,”he said. “I’m not just in one classroom with the same 150 kids. I get to meet new students constantly and help them across various subjects.” He emphasized that this flexibility allows him to build stronger, more personal connections, saying,”I feel like I can make a bigger impact because I don’t have to focus solely on a set lesson plan—I can help students with what they’re really going through.”
Reflecting on his own school experience, Mr. Dilitto admitted he was not exactly a model student. “Back then, I took all the easiest classes—no APs or anything challenging—because I didn’t really enjoy studying or exerting myself, ” he shared. However, everything changed in college. “When I realized that applying myself allowed me to take more interesting classes and go further in my education, I started trying harder.”His own growth underscores his passion for encouraging students to push themselves.
He also offered insight into how teachers can make his job easier.” When teachers have their plans and expectations clearly organized, I can follow through smoothly,” he said. “But when there’s nothing prepared, it’s harder to manage behavior and keep students on track.” His message is clear: structure and preparation make a significant difference.
A typical day for Mr. Dilitto begins with checking in at the office to get his assignment, then engaging with students. “I treat every student with respect and help them accomplish their goals,”he explained. His routine includes a familiar speech at the start of each class, reminding students that he’s there to support them and setting rules about cell phone use and independent work. “Most classes look the same from start to finish,”he said,”which helps students know what to expect and feel more comfortable.”
Prairie students have taken notice of Mr. Dilitto’s positive attitude and genuine care. His dedication to making learning enjoyable and accessible has made him a favorite among students and staff alike. With his passion for teaching and his ability to connect with students on a personal level, Mr. Dilitto truly embodies what it means to be an inspiring educator.
