After a long day managing difficult classes, homework and mental focuses, it is common to feel overwhelmed after an average school day. Students manage to figure out different strategies on being able to handle these difficult situations. Handling stress requires a combination of different de-stress techniques and healthy lifestyle habits.
Sometimes students feel even more pressure when dealing with an overwhelming amount of homework all needed to be pushed into one night or extreme studying before an exam. When speaking to Ellie Moore, she says, “I tend to feel most stressed when I have tests or a lot of homework on a night that I also have practice because I barely have time to get it done so I get all my other things done before practice and quickly do my homework before bed.” When adding extracurriculars into an already tight schedule, it’s difficult to make time for priorities like school work. Lejla Tanjo agrees by stating, “I have volleyball and get home late so I stay up so late to just manage getting all my work done and it stresses me out most days and to deal with that I try to do it right after school and then I have a couple hours to watch my shows before practice instead of waiting.”
Physical activity or talking through your problems is a really effective way of lowering stress hormones and helps release that stressful tension. Moore explains, “The first thing I do after having a hard day is going home to talk to my mom or go to my boyfriend’s house to hangout” For some people talking to people helps manage stressful situations to get it off their just and possibly get advice from other people who deal with the same problems like another student. Some disagree and think it’s easier to stay private and find more calming and isolated techniques to deal with that overwhelming feeling. Like for example Tanjo says, “I don’t like talking to people about my stressful situations unless I really don’t know what to do, so the first thing that I do is watch movies in my bed and take a nap because it makes me feel better” Watching shows allows people to have that mental reset and focus on other things rather than your own issues.
