Flying across the Atlantic to spend his senior year at Prairie High School, we meet with Carlos DeLestal, who is an exchange student from Spain. He flew into the Portland International Airport on August 25th to embark on his last year of high school, here in America.

Carlos has been enjoying his time here, “My favorite part of America is school since everything is easier and more practical compared to Spain” DeLestal says. Talking about the biggest differences between America and Spain he says “The biggest difference is the distances a 30-minute trip in America is short but for a Spaniard, it is very long.”

When he was asked about how the food is different in the two countries he said “The food is a big change compared to Spain, everything has more sugar and calories but the food with sugar is better in the USA.” He enjoys the burgers and the Orange Fanta we have here in America the most.

When asked about the biggest cultural difference between Spain and America DeLestal says “The biggest cultural difference is the issue of meals, in Spain we have 5 meals and dinner is normally at 10 pm.”

Now we take to his host brother who he is living with, Seth Walker, a senior here at Prairie High School. “This is my family’s second year hosting,” said Walker. Last year he hosted Jonathan Moll who was a sophomore at Prairie that is from Germany. “He doesn’t affect it, he mostly stays in his room all day,” Walker says when asked if Carlos affects his life at home.

Seth states that his favorite part of hosting exchange students is “Hearing about their different cultures.” When asked if he wanted to visit either of the countries his exchange students have been from he said “No, neither of the countries. I like it here in the USA.” If your family is ever interested in hosting an exchange student Walker says “Every year we get to choose the student we want to live with us.” This is great if you speak a foreign language and are interested in becoming a host family!
