At Prairie High School, art is more than just a creative outlet, it plays an important role in supporting students’ mental health. From painting and drawing to digital design, and even writing. Students are finding ways to express emotions, reduce stress and improve their overall well being through artistic activities. For many students art provides a safe space where they can relax and be themselves.
Art class at prairie gives students the opportunity to step away from daily stress and focus on creativity. Whether it’s sketching, painting, or listening to music while working, students are able to enter what Mr Shadle calls a “happy place.” In this space, worries fade and focus shifts to self expression. This break from stress can make a big difference in students’ mental health during busy school days.
Mr. Shadle believes strongly in the emotional power of art. “Art is very therapeutic. The process of expressing our innermost feelings is an act that everyone can benefit from,” he said. He encourages students to use their artwork to process difficult emotions and experiences. According to him, art allows students to communicate feelings they might not be able to express in words, making it a valuable tool for coping.
He has also noticed a growing need for this kind of expression. “Sadly the amount of trauma art I’ve seen turned in has risen dramatically this year,” Mr. Shadle explained. Despite this, he sees art as a positive way for students to work through challenges. By turning difficult experiences into creative expression, students can begin to heal and better understand themselves in a supportive environment.
Overall, art plays a meaningful role in education at Prairie High School. While subjects like math and language are essential, art adds something unique. It allows students to explore who they are and connect with others through a universal form of communication. As Mr. Shadle explains, art helps students grow not just academically, but emotionally—making it an important part of a well-rounded education.
