SBAC testing season is quickly approaching and students at Prairie High School are getting ready. For many students, standardized testing can bring anxiety and pressure. Teachers are working to support students with preparation strategies and encouragement. Together the prairie community is focused on confidence, calmness and success.
According to Prairie assistant principal Mr Gourde, the most important thing students can really do is simply try their best. “We are really proud of the students here at prairie, and if our kids actually put forth their best effort, we will do very well,” he says. Gourde also shared that while he is a little competitive and would like Prairie scores to be strong compared to nearby schools, his main focus is seeing students give their full effort. He emphasized that the prairie community supports students as they work through the testing season.
Gourde also explained that the SBAC measures more than just academic knowledge. Situations like standardized testing can challenge students’ resilience, character, integrity, and grit. He reminded students that difficult tasks can build confidence and perseverance. “Its important to remember that we can do hard things,” Gourde says, encouraging students not to give up when a test question feels challenging.
Students at Prairie also have their own perspectives on SBAC testing. Sophomore Violet McMurtry shared that she believes the test can be a useful way to measure someone’s knowledge, even though it can be frustrating when technical issues occur. She also noted that classroom presentation can make a big difference in how confident students feel during the exam.
McMurtry said that one of the most helpful things teachers do is give assignments that are similar to SBAC questions. Practicing with similar material allows students to understand the format and expectations of the test before they begin. As testing continues this spring, prairie students and staff hope preparation, effort, and encouragement will help falcons succeed on the SBAC.
