The students and staff at Prairie High School came together for a Black History Month assembly to honor black voices and reflect on the past, present, and future. Planned by students and staff, the assembly highlighted the importance of remembering history while recognizing its impact today. The event encouraged the school community to listen, learn, and ensure these voices continue to be heard.
Prairie high school came together on Friday, February 13th 2026, for the Black History Month assembly. The event focuses on honoring voices and remembering the past, present, and future. Planned by the students and staff at Prairie, the assembly reminded the school’s community why Black History matters and why the stories should never be forgotten.
The idea of the assembly was to give voices a place to be heard and honor the people who helped shape history. Through student involvement and staff support, Prairie High School worked together to highlight Black culture, achievements, and experiences. The goal of Black History Month and this assembly is not to just reflect on the past, but also to understand how it impacts life today and the future ahead.
Ms. Schiller, a teacher and the advisor of BSU (Black Student Union) at Prairie high school, shared why the assembly was important. “Supper is important mainly because it shows how we’ve become, and to not repeat the past, and to show people who and how they got us here today,” she said. Her message emphasized learning from history and recognizing the individuals who made change possible.
A student organizer and a member of BSU who helped with the assembly, Makhi Harrin, also explained the purpose of why he helped. “The Black community is not as big, but we wanted culture to be shown,” he answered. He also added that the assembly helped students “recognize not just the past, present and future and to recognize not just the bad but also the good things in history too.” BSU hopes that the Black History Month assembly encourages students to listen, learn, and continue honoring Black History beyond just one month.
