Tommie Vick has been awarded Prairie High School’s Week 15 ‘Athlete of the Week’ for being named tournament Outstanding Wrestler at the AC Davis Invite and beating a 3x state placer and returning state finalist.
A Senior Team Captain and 2x State Placer, Tommie Vick knows what it takes to be great at what he does. Not only does he show leadership in everything he does, he shows what hard work and dedication can do for you. A First Team All-Region wide receiver for football this year, success isn’t necessarily new for Vick and neither is recognition. But it is the way he carries himself. Quiet, humble, and independent, all things that make Tommie Vick, Tommie Vick.
Everyone has a role model. They give you something to look up to and success to strive for. When asked about it, “My role model is Seth Blick because he taught me a lot,” Week 15 ‘Athlete of the Week’ Tommie Vick said. Now a role model for many others, as Vick looks back to his role model, he remembers all the things Blick did for him. Coming into high school, Vick had never done wrestling as a sport. Blick took him under his wing and helped blossom Vick’s already natural athleticism and strength into an art on the mat.
Athlete of the Week has a shine to it when looked at by all athletes. A goal to strive for. It carries a lot of weight around the school and in personal lives, congratulations always feel nice. When asked about his message to Vick, “Continue to use this platform to inspire current and future athletes, as this is one way to showcase hard work. And congratulations!” Athletic Director Everett Klodt said.
Inspiration is something that every person needs. And Vick embodies inspiration. A team player in every sport and a nice person to anyone he meets, many people look up to him. When asked about the advice he would give to younger athletes aspiring to excel in his sport, “To keep at it even when it feels hard and you feel like you’re not getting better,” Vick said. A statement that should not be overlooked. Every athlete goes through adversity and the one way out of it is to outwork it. Vick has done that year after year. Whether it is less success than he hoped for, or desire to be better when it feels like he plateaued, Vick never stops working.
Athlete of the Week is a highly appreciated award and it should be congratulated. Vick has gotten there through his own hard work and adversity, never letting his inspiration leave his sight while leaving his own inspiration for those below him.
