Prairie high school is known for a lot of things. Its athletics, its not so falcon looking falcon mascot, its age and history, and much more. But one thing about it is still unsure: What’s the food really like?
More specifically, what are the hot lunch options like? How do students feel about hot lunches? What do students usually get? What do they like? What do they dislike? What would they change? The rules, norms, and guidelines around school lunches, from Prairie to Nationally, has always been a topic of debate and importance. But if students were in control, at least at prairie, what would they change? What would they keep?
One student has their own idea. “I would make calzones a week around thing,” Sophomore Class President Jesse Driscoll says in regards to what he would change about Prairie High’s lunch rotation. “Because it’s tragic they aren’t. And then I’d abolish nachos and get 2 lines for burgers, because the line is just way too long.”
Prairie’s school lunches have their fair share of goods and bads. Some say it brings convenience to those who do not have time or would have a harder time making cold lunch for themselves. It also provides many programs to get lunch cheaper or for free for those with lower incomes. But others have criticized hot lunch for its quality, options, line issues, and its taste.
Lunch at Prairie has had its fair share of changes in the past few years in attempts of improvement. “Honestly, in the beginning of my freshmen year, they were alright,” Senior Caleb Harr, a consistent hot lunch eater says, regarding Prairies hot lunch in the past few years. “But I feel like they’ve gotten better over time. They definitely have a lot more options now. And the food itself has gotten a slight increase in quality, so that’s cool,”
School lunches have always brought debates and controversy to discussions, whether it be the good, bad, or in between. It generally seems like most who have to or choose to get it at the very least tolerate it. Despite what people think of it, though, hot lunch is an option that will not be going away anytime soon.
