Prairie High School’s ASB club is hosting a free Winter Carnival on Dec. 13. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the school’s main building and gym to give back to the community by giving families and children the chance to participate in festive games, food, hot cocoa, and other fun activities.
This event is quickly becoming a new and emerging tradition at Prairie High School. ASB and other clubs are preparing festive activities for children and community members of any age. The goal is to make a warm and sociable atmosphere where families, especially children, have the freedom to enjoy and celebrate the holiday season. “It’s a very fun, high-energy event for kids to have a great time and understand what Christmas is about,” said Deven Vigue, ASB member. Students and staff say the carnival strengthens our connection to the community and builds up our school spirit.
During the carnival, families are encouraged to explore the different lineup of activities and booths being hosted by different student clubs involved in this event. They offer different games and crafts for children to experience. They will have holiday card crafts, photos with Santa, stocking decorating, Hanukkah activities, and other fun games. Our toy drive is to ensure every kid gets a toy for Christmas this year.
The Winter Carnival has evolved into more than just a school event, it’s become a place for the community to congregate. Families are able to get together in a safe and engaging atmosphere for their children to enjoy, while our clubs use this opportunity as a way to raise awareness, support, and give back. “Everyone who’s involved with it has the same goal of providing that fun afternoon to the community,” said Mr. Root, ASB Advisor. “I think that it’s getting executed really well.” More people come each year which represents the impact of this event.
Behind the scenes, many student leaders work diligently to make the Winter Carnival a success. ASB members as well as other clubs contribute their own designs, booth ideas, and organize activities. Students have the opportunity to step up into leadership roles and work together, while also being able to make a memorable experience for the children. “Itzel Contreras Montiel has been fantastic, she’s leading the committee so far, she has done an excellent job reaching out to people,” said Mr. Root. “Starting our toy drive, reaching out to all different clubs to get them involved.” These efforts accentuate how important student leadership is and how it aids the shape of the Winter Carnival.
