In recent years AI has become a hot-button issue among schools across the country with the emergence of heavily advanced A.I. Some simply believe a ban will curb plagiarism and keep students sharp while others see a new tool for the future that can help jumpstart new ideas among students and add new meaning to the creative process.
OpenAI, creator of Chat-GPT has recently released GPT 4, a new model trained on Internet information as recent as December 2023 was released on March 14th, 2023 only one year after GPT 3.5’s release showing A.I progression won’t slow down any time soon. This has left many caught in the wind of change such as our school systems which are seeing monumental shifts in policy.
Government bodies like the U.S. Department of Education have put out statements with insight and recommendations but no clear policy for schools to follow, only broadly stating that A.I could be as helpful as it could be harmful to education and to keep an eye out.
A.I. isn’t just a tool that can help students though, many teachers apply A.I to further their work for students by creating lesson plans, writing assessments, and creating IEPs. Teachers’ most popular pick is Magic School AI which has over 1.5 Million active users.
Traveling to Praire we can see that A.I is as prevalent as anywhere else, with both teachers and students using any respective programs for anything you could think of. A.I will make an official entrance to our school with the introduction of an A.I unit in Business Communications taught by Mrs. Engelbart next school year. She hopes this new course will help students adapt to these new programs and potentially apply it to the workforce once leaving school. “I think that it has helped enhance the curriculum that I already have, and I think that it will continue to enhance the learning experience I offer my students.” Mrs. Engelbart stated after being asked about A.I integration in the classroom.
As companies like OpenAI continue to push the boundaries of technology we will see more advanced models of these services making today a very turbulent time for technological regulation. As A.I changes our world day by day, dystrophy can be seen as new growth as well.
