The PHS cheer squad has found quite the success on the mat this year during their competition season, noting that they hit zero several times. Although, this is only what we see on the surface. Behind this team is one specific captain who has been leading the team throughout the whole 2023-2024 season, Junior, Chailya Robinson.
Robinson has been part of the PHS varsity cheer squad since her freshman year and has worked her way up to becoming captain. What comes with being a captain on this squad? Robinson says “I contribute to the behind-the-scenes aspect of cheer such as running social media, practices, calling cheers, and setting reminders to make sure everyone stays organized.”
With being part of the team for 3 years Robinson has formed many close friendships with a lot of the girls on the team. There is a line between being a friend while also being a captain, she says “Sometimes having to give constructive criticism to one of my friends can be hard but since we all communicate well, we know it’s coming from a good and positive place.” Robinson adds “We both give each other full respect and both know the difference between a practice setting and a personal setting.”
Robinson leads about 18 girls from the varsity squad, one being, Junior, Ellie Ogle. Both began cheering at the start of their freshman year. When Robinson became captain this season Ogle expressed her thoughts on it, “Chailya displays a lot of strong leadership and really good communication skills.”
