The PHS book club. A club created by two friends with a passion for reading.
Two now seniors, sophomores at the time Ellie Davis and Katya Yaremenko discovered their love of reading and discussing books. They decided if they got a big group with the same interest in reading together it would be great to start a club. The group would pick a list of books for the year to read and the club advisor Mrs. Zika would find donations and grants to get as many copies of the novels. With that, the first meeting of the book club was held spring of 2022. After that, the next meetings would be held one Thursday a month in Mrs. Zika’s classroom.
The club has read many books since then like their first being Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds which the group had particularly bonded over. A few this year have been An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins, and Legend by Marie Lu. However, since then there have been fewer members participating as the book club has died down.
Though the book club has stopped holding meetings due to the small size of the group one of the club members Ellie Davis has said “ It was really fun while it lasted though and I am grateful for all the memories and all the readers I got to connect with.” It’s always heartwarming to see passionate readers come together, even if it’s for a short while, and cherish books in their own unique way. Overall the book club was a great way to connect with others, bond over books, expand understanding through others’ interpretations, and of course make great memories.
