On Monday, November 14th the SOS program Presented “ACT” to Junior English classes in the Prairie Libary. Students met in the library to learn the signs of suicide and how to “ACT.”
Selected students trained the juniors on how to properly Implement “ACT” by showing three clips that helped the students learn how to “Acknowledge,” “Care,” and “Tell.” Acknowledging the signs of suicide, showing you care, and telling a trusted adult. This is what “ACT” stands for and is what the students are taught to do when someone they know might be experiencing suicidal thoughts.
Students who watched the presentation had multiple emotions. Junior Jaedyn Flores said, “The presentation made me feel sad to see how others are struggling and sometimes don’t get the proper help but it also made me feel aware of how others around me feel or what they could potentially be going through.” Other students said it was a serious topic to talk about and made them feel surprised, anxious, and sad. Most of the students said they had a better understanding of suicide and the signs of suicide.
When talking to Senior Lisvet Allerano who was a presenter for the SOS program said, “I would do it again because everyone was really nice, the classes were all well-behaved, and it’s a great opportunity to do something good.” The SOS program is a great program that helps students get a better understanding of suicide and how to “ACT.” Lisvet Allerano also said, “I would recommend others to do SOS as well, it’s a great opportunity to participate in your Prairie community.”
