Shelley Douglas has always had a thriving passion for English and teaching, even when she was young. Douglas always enjoys reading, writing, and being at school, making her more passionate to become a teacher when she was older. She achieved her goal later in life, when she started teaching at Columbia River High School. Before she started teaching, she obtained her Bachelor’s degree in English and Secondary Education at Lindfield University, class of 2005. Soon after, Douglas got her Masters in Education from Washington State University, Vancouver, class of 2013.
Douglas started her teaching career at Columbia River HS for 11 years, teaching English and being the head of ASB office. She wanted a change, something different that what she had been doing, so she took the bold step of going to Tukes valley Middle School and teaching young adults. Douglas taught English there for 6 years, but she soon realized that she missed teaching high school students a lot. She then decided to go to Prairie High School in 2022
Douglas loved the new switch up at Prairie, enjoying the environment that the school brought. The English department and her students are amazing and she never wants to leave. Douglas hopes that every student knows that she cares and “ I want them to feel seen, heard and respected when they are in my classroom” .
One of her students, Meliya Conn, is taking English with Mrs. Douglas this year. Conn loves the class and the curriculum that comes with it. She truly loves Douglas as a teacher and enjoys the memories she makes in that class. One takeaway she learned from Douglas is to “ always be prepared for what is next, don’t ponder on the past” .
