Oliver Root, a Prairie High School math teacher, continues to impact students’ lives every time they step foot into his class. Root has been at Prairie for nine years and never wants to leave this amazing high school
Root started his journey after graduating from Battle Ground High School in 2011. He soon attended Washington State University in Pullman for five years, first, wanting to go into a chemical engineering degree. Root soon learned that this path was not for him, and decided to try a new path in mathematics. He also obtained his teaching certificate from Washington State University in Pullman
After he graduated, he decided to student teach at Heritage High School and moved to Prairie High School soon after. Root got offered a job at Prairie High School and was excited to start his new journey as a falcon. Root was excited to work with Mrs. Homola and the rest of the math department
Root has been in the ASB department for 2 years helping to facilitate all the events that go on in Prairie, such as assemblies. Throughout his teaching journey and being in ASB, he learned the importance of leadership. Throughout his endeavors, Root realized that “ little action makes big things happen”, and he has lived on that quote ever since. Root stated that “ I don’t care about money because money does not mean as much as the impact that I can make on people’s lives”.
One student, Campbell Mackey, has felt a huge impact from being in Roots class. Mackey took modeling with math with Root and was also under the leadership of Root during ASB. Mackey loved that Root would always try to “ fit everything I needed to know into a way that I could understand that would match the way that I learn”. Mackey has also learned many valuable lessons from Root, one being to “ always try and to never give up”.
