Nereida Herrera, Staff Writer

Energetic, talented, weird, if you’re looking for somebody fun to be around, senior Nereida Herrera has these traits. She's an extrovert, and it seems to just come naturally to her. “I talk a lot, and I love meeting new people,” Nereida said. She's also a great friend and is always willing to help someone out when they need it.

Her talents definitely aren't limited, she loves to play musical instruments like saxophone and guitar, and she also enjoys singing. Her Dad is a musician, and that inspires her. “I’m passionate about music because I grew up with a family of musicians. At first, I didn't like it, but when I started doing choir I became really passionate about it,” She hopes she can continue her love for music throughout her life.

Having special skills and talents can be draining. So, Nereida has certain people who motivate her to keep going, specifically her Mom. “My Mom’s been through a lot, she had to fight for us a lot after coming to America.” Her inspiration definitely thrives through her mom's strength and perseverance in life.

Nereida loves helping others and making them feel good. Not only is she a good friend, but she serves her community willingly. She volunteers her time to her church, whether it's making food or helping care for the kids, her eagerness to help somebody or make a difference in their life is strong. This isn't something she plans on quitting anytime soon.

She sees herself being selfless even in the future. Nereida sees herself continuing to help with her church community in 5 years, building upon that to make her life the best it can be, “I see myself helping with the church. I want to sing or help with the kids. I know that they sometimes bother their parents, or act out. I think I can actually help them understand what's right.”

Nereida’s optimism and positive attitude toward the world will take her far after high school, and she doesn't plan on changing one bit.
