Prairie High School boys’ basketball won the GSHL 3A title after defeating the Mt. View Thunder in The Nest on Tuesday, February 4th.
The Falcons last won the league four years ago, in the 2021 fall season, under head coach Kyle Brooks and current head coach Jimmy Tuominen, his assistant at the time. This was Coach Tuominen’s first league title as head coach, and his former mentor, Brooks, was there to celebrate the win with him.
When asked more about Prairies coaching staff, Senior Riley Burke shares, “We have a solid coaching staff who know what they’re talking about,” Burke. More players share positives about their coaches such as keeping up with them throughout the off-season, always keeping things competitive, and bringing good energy and high knowledge to the court. Other than Coach Tuominen, the assistants include, Cody Barton, Dre Paschal, Evan Timperley, and Jonathan Warner.
In addition to the coaches, this group of student-athletes brings a whole new level of play to the basketball program. Senior Denton Dearborn says, “This team, everybody can have a breakout night and just take over at any time, which makes this team different.”
The game was a nail-biter, leading up to the Falcons clinching the league title. They trailed the Thunder after the first, second, and third quarters (16-17) (31-36) (43-46). They then ended the game with the win, 60-55. Junior Carson Morningstar led the team to victory with 29 points.
Making playoffs this season, the three seniors share how much this means to them, as their last season comes to an end. “Super big deal,” Dearborn. “Means everything,” Burke. “Spent the whole season working and achieved our goal,” Jared Femling. With a 13-7 record overall and a 6-2 league record, the Falcons will take on Lakes High School on February 12th at home. A team whom they fell short to earlier this season by one point. This will determine if their season will continue or if the 2025 season will come to an end.
