Last Tuesday night, December 10th, our varsity Prairie Boys Basketball team beat 4A high school, Union, at our first home game this season. The boys faced a tough challenge this week, as many of them were sick, “A lot of us were feeling sick, that took a toll on us because we were all dehydrated” explained Daniel Carbajal-Vargas, a sophomore starting this year as his first year on varsity. However the team fought hard and found motivation to keep fighting every quarter, “we haven’t beat Union in 10 years, that really motivated us.” Carbajal-Vargas said.
There were many key moments, and plays made by individuals in this game that gave the team a push forward. Jared Femling, one of the few seniors on varsity, said his favorite moment of the game was “When I took the charge”. A pivotal moment in the game was “right before halftime when I got that block, that really shifted momentum” Carbajal-Vargas said. Some other key players in this game include “Ben (Nkansah) because he locked up their best offensive scorer to like, 8 points, and Carson Morningstar and Malachi (Patton) because they both got a lot of points.” (Femling).
Although our team has outstanding individuals, there is also a significant amount of team chemistry that shined through during this game. Community and culture have always been a priority at Prairie, but specifically this year our boy’s basketball team seems to have a lot of strength in teamwork. “We all play together, none of us are selfish, and we play as a team” (Carbajal-Vargas). Beating Union was a huge feat for Prairie, and could not have been done without the effort given by every single player on the team.
The Prairie boys basketball team shows a lot of promise this year and hopes to take the title of ‘League Champs,’ and continue their season competing for state. The competition is daunting this year, but nothing they can’t handle, so show up to games and support our boys’ basketball team as they continue this winning streak!
