Prairie’s golfing season starts in a couple of weeks and golfers are looking optimistic. Tri-Mountain, Prairie’s home turf, is ready for another challenging but successful season. With spring, Prairie golfers head out to Tri-Mountain prepared for another season. This team had previously made bi-districts last season. Many of the Juniors on varsity last year look forward to making it further this year.
Though, athletes face adversity every year, off-season and on-season. Former Head Coach Paul Shapard has left the team due to medical issues. This has worried the golfers, he has been the rock for the team. “My favorite part of being on the golf team was to have Paul Shap be my coach and him helping improve the way I viewed and played the game. It’s very technical and how you view the field can change how you play,” varsity golfer Nolan Niesz commented. Learning techniques can be especially difficult compared to most sports, and a coach can change the season for athletes.
“I have faced many challenges with my slice with my driver and the team has faced problems with scoring low, beating other teams when it matters,” varsity golfer Grant Lane mentioned. Slicing is where the player hits the ball away from their dominant hand; it happens due to not hitting the ball flush with the club. Golf comes down to technique, an individual swing can add up to costing a tournament. However, this is not going to stop Prairie golfers from having a successful season.
Grant and Nolan plan to continue golfing after high school. The coaches, players, and camaraderie all have made golfing a passion for themselves. As golfers of 5+ years, the opportunity to play another season only has them thrilled to perform at their best.
