On Tuesday, January 22, 2025, Prairie High School administrators announced a new tardy policy hoping that students will take the new policy seriously. Many students aren’t too happy with the new tardy policy.
Giovanni Pucci, a senior student in Prairie High School isn’t happy with the new tardy policy. “It just feels harsh and unfair for the students, the new policy is especially harsh for the students who have to walk all the way across the school campus just to get to their next class.” Said Giovanni. The new tardy policy is stricter, but it’s also supposed to be reasonable for students. “I strongly believe that the new tardy policy will get students to get moving to their next classes.” Said Mr. Fox. The new tardy policy will hopefully motivate students to attend class on time.
Too many students will get unnecessary calls home, lunch detentions, and school suspensions. Many students have a massive disadvantage with the passing periods. Some students have to walk across the campus just to get to class and they are usually late, or if they get lucky, they’ll be on time by a few seconds. Some students will sometimes sprint or speed walk to class bumping into other students just to make it to class on time. Some students block the class paths. They just keep on talking standing in the way of other students with no spatial awareness. “I have my fifth-period class in the 900 building and after that class ends, I have to go all the way across the campus to get to the 400 building for my sixth-period class, even worse my classroom is upstairs all the way in the back,” Giovanni said.
“I believe that five solid minutes is plenty of time for you to get from point A to point B.” Said Mr. Fox. “If our school is going to use this new policy, at least make our passing periods six minutes instead of five minutes, that extra one minute would help other students and me.” Said Giovanni. Many other students will disagree with our new tardy policy, but a new thing needs to be tested out. Students should hopefully discipline themselves to get to class on time. “We hope that there will be improvements in the attendance and tardy rates.” Mr. Fox said. Overall our new tardy policy’s purpose is to get students to get to class on time instead of talking or wandering off.
