On Monday, April 8th students and staff at Prairie High School found themselves connecting to a new wifi network, frustrating students.
“Personal devices and cellphones are not able to connect,” says Ms. Wennerlind, Librarian at Prairie High School on April 10th. She adds that “if you do connect, they [the district] can monitor the device.” This was the same as the last wifi network, though students quickly found a way to get past that using a VPN, allowing students to be on their phones whenever they wanted.
“I can’t open texts that are important,” says Liv Fussell, senior at Prairie High School on April 11th. This seems to be the overall issue students are experiencing with the new network because they cannot connect their phones. It has not only affected problem apps such as Instagram and Snapchat but also general text messaging such as Imessage.
“Many students seem pretty unhappy about it,” says Mr. Pedler, Culinary teacher at Prairie High School on April 11th.
However, teachers have noticed that, “students are more engaged in class,” says Mr. Pedler, adding that, “[the] majority of teachers went through school without wifi, and they have turned out fine.”
