Washington state high school winter sports are approaching and according to WIAA rules, practices will begin next Monday, November 12. At Prairie High School, winter sports include girls and boys basketball, wrestling, dance and cheer, as well as boys swimming and girls bowling and gymnastics.

Last year, both varsity basketball teams as well as individual wrestlers and the dance team made their way to the state championship competition. Returning athletes from these respective teams have high hopes this year in furthering their success. Prairie athletes have been preparing for the winter season with preseason practices in both the summer and the fall.

After both basketball teams were knocked out after the first round of the state tournament, senior, Cassidy Gardner, girls varsity basketball player, thinks, ¨the [basketball] team is ready for season because we all want to redeem ourselves from last season and everyone seems really excited.¨

Gardner encourages people to try out for basketball because, ¨it is fun to represent your school.” Basketball tryouts will be held next monday in the main gym.

Prairie’s wrestling team also had success last year and have 5 boys who will be returning state wrestlers this year. Junior wrestler, Bridger Paradis, has high expectations for the team this year as they have had preseason workouts, ¨going on at least twice a week for most of the summer and fall,” says Paradis.

Paradis encourages people to come out for wrestling because it will, “get you into the best shape of your life” and it, “teaches you so much.” The first wrestling practice is next Monday at 3:00 in the wrestling room at Prairie.

To participate in a winter sport, students need to go to the ASB office at Prairie and turn in a sports packet. Further questions about when tryouts are for each winter sport can be answered by Prairie’s athletic director, Jason Castro, or by the coaches of each sport.
